May 22, 2011: The P-Litter puppies were tattooed yesterday and some will be going to their new homes. A few will come back for pick up this weekend. These will be the last photos of some of them. They are truly a spectacular litter.
Click to see the P-Litter at 7 1/2 wks old.
May 19: ALL P LITTER PUPS SOLD. Thanks for all the interest. However, some are amazing new 7-week old photos can be viewed here.
Tips & Tricks page updated with information about puppy retrieving and use of the command FETCH.
Also, new pictures added to the N-Litter VJP Results page.
May 16: PUPPIES FIRST VET VISIT. The P Litter kids went to the vet Friday morning and Dr Tedrow gave them a physical, their first series of shots, and wormed them. They were perfectly well behaved, and not one squealed from the needle. Brave little cupcakes.
On Friday, May 20th, we travel to Watertown so the pups can be tattooed, and thereby officially becomming a Deutsch Drahthaar. If anyone who has not already done so would like to request a specific name for their pup, please do so within the next few days. I can't promise, but will try to match the name with the pup selected for you. A few names are already taken, but most are available.
Puppies are ready to go home this weekend, Saturday/Sunday May 21st and 22nd. If it would be more convenient the pups can be picked up on Friday in Watertown, SD, at the Dakota Animal Clinic, where they will be tattooed. Contact me for directions and time. Otherwise, please email or call and let me know when you will be picking up your new pup.
For further information about what will be given to you with your new pup, and details about the food, read this new document: Picking Up Your Pup.
May 9: P Litter pups: PRESTON, PARKER, PATTON, PENMAN, PANTHER, PERCIVAL, PENDRAGON, PRIAM, PETTER, PETRA and PRUDENCE all went for their first car ride today - yes, in a kennel. No cry babies in the bunch. And they went outside to play today too, as we are enjoying a beautiful warm and breezy spring day. The go for their first round of shots next week!
May 5: Pictures added to the N Litter pups at the VJP.
May 2: N Litter -- Here are the scores for the N Litter pups at the VJP last weekend. There were 17 dogs entered over the 4 day test, and they all passed! The weather was incredibly unpredictable - one minute is was sunny and dry, then 50-70 mph winds, rain, sleet, snow, we had it all. The conditions were pretty miserable at times, but the handlers and dogs toughed it out and finished their tests. The judges did a fantasitc job of trying to get the best performances from these young dog in such awful conditions. Some dogs had great days, and some had not so great days. But that's just how it goes. These were all fine dogs. Congratulations to all handlers for a job well done, regardless of the point totals. Click here.
May 1: New Training & Tips Page: We have received emails and calls from all the O Litter pup owners, and so far all the little cupcakes have settled in reasonably well. Since there have been so many questions concerning when to train, what to train and how to train, I thought I would post a schedule and some tips for training. I will add more information (and pictures!) in weeks to follow!!! Email me with any specific problems or questions you may have.
April 24: Happy to report the P Litter pups are thriving, and fat as butterballs. Iris needs a little help feeding so many hungry mouths, so we have been supplementing the litter with a mixture of scrambled eggs and puppy formula. (See photos of eating time here.) They really love this food, and dive right in. Iris helps clean up - she likes it too! These puppies are developing beautiful coats. Some are already very hard, and most are dense. All the pups have started to grow their beards too. They started to play with each other and are really cute to watch. I am spending way too much time playing with them already, but can't help myself.
More News: The N litter will be running VJP next weekend, and we wish all the owners and their dogs the best of luck. Watch for scores posted May 2nd.
April 17: Been a busy time around here - pups, calves, more pups, more calves. Time flies. The O Litter went to their new homes last weekend. Sad but also a happy time. The owners are thrilled with them.
O Litter -- It's been a while since the last post. Lots of news to report. Hard to believe the O Litter pups, (OTTO, ORSIN, OGDEN, OLIVER, ORION, OSKAR, OLIVIA and OLGA), have all gone to their new homes. They seem to have settled in well. We posted photos of them at the vet's office when they were receiving their first set of shots. The pups have grown up to be happy, outgoing and confident little dogs. We'll post photos as their new owners send them.
P Litter -- The P litter pups are now 2 weeks old. They are growing rapidly and have at least doubled their birth weight. Their eyes are opening now and they are becoming more mobile. The pups know when I approach the whelping box, and when I sit down they waddle towards me and want to climb into my lap. Really sweet little cupcakes!
SAD NEWS: Leika vom Schwaneburg, the mother of our G and H Litters, has passed away. We bought Leika from her breeder in Germany 9 years ago. She stayed with us for several years, and after her second litter she became a full-time hunting dog, working hard guiding clients during the season at our Lodge. The last few years she 'retired' with a family in Colorado, where she had a terrific life. She was a sweet and talented dog, and passed on her kind disposition to many of her pups. February 15th was Leika's 14th birthday. She will be sadly missed, and lovingly remembered.
People have asked about the kennel and so I thought we should show some photos of the kennel where the pups are raised. These show the two separate but attached whelping rooms for the mothers and their pups.
March 30:
Iris gave birth to 11 beautiful little puppies. 5 braunschimmel, 6 schwarzschimmel. 2 females (1 braunschimmel 1 schwarzschimmel) and 9 males!!!! Iris is pretty tired but otherwise happy and contented to be in her whelping box taking care of the pups. We have them separated in two groups so she can mange them, and she spends 4 hours with each group before we rotate them. With so many little pups crawling around the box, it's difficult for a female to keep track of them all, and keeping half of them in a warming box helps keep them safe while they are so young and vulnerable.
The pups are very consistent in size, and they all have blazes on their heads. Pretty markings too. They are lively pups, and all have full bellies. Hopefully they will all continue to thrive.

March 29: P LITTER ANNOUNCEMENT!!!
Last night at 2:30 Indy started whelping the P litter pups. So far we have 6 beautiful little babies, but Iris is clearly not finished yet. We will keep you posted as to color and sex when she is finished. First baby photos soon. Mom is getting tired, but otherwise she and babies are doing well!
March 19: Important information about the M litter posted here.
March 16: Hard to believe the pups are 4 weeks old today. People are already planning their pick-up times in a couple weeks. Where in the world has the time gone?
Coats on some pups are turning dark - lots os schimmel. They have their puppy teeth now, so I will start feeding them within the next few days. They play and interact with each other quite a bit too, which is fun to watch. Personalities are starting to develop, and all very active and inquisitive. The interesting thing is how well they respond to my voice when I come into the room and call them. They definitely want to be picked up and handled - a really good sign. First set of puppy shots in 2 weeks, and tattoo appointment a week after that.
Click here to see the 4-wk old pictures. (added 3/19)
March 6: 3-wk old pictures added.
March 1: O Litter update -- The pups are growing! They look like fat little cupcakes. Most of them are starting to get the schimmel into their white puppy coat, and you can see by the photos they are turing dark. They are starting to walk a little around the whelping box, and have opened their eyes. Up until now they have been blind and deaf, but at this point they will begin to hear and see things. We will trim their nails for the first time today, and start spending lots of time with them as they become more aware of their surroundings. We believe now is the time to really start cultivating the human bond with the pups, and begin the process of turing them from pack dogs into people dogs. As they become more responsive they start being lots of fun to play with! Jasmine is a great mom, and doing a terrific job of raising her little family.
